Primary schools compete for regional kapahaka prize
Manukau City Council and Toi o Manukau are pleased to support next week’s Auckland Region Primary Schools Kapahaka
Competition.
In its second year, the competition will be held at the Manukau Sports Bowl on Thursday 22nd and Friday 23rd June from
9am to 4pm both days.
Finlayson Park School who represented the Auckland region at last year’s national kapahaka competition will be hosting
23 primary schools from across the region. They’re coming from from as far south as Port Waikato, Henderson in the west,
Waiheke Island to the east and Birkdale in the north.
This regional competition determines which school qualifies for the national kapahaka competition at Te Rapa, Hamilton
in October.
Competition organisers are enthusiastic about the value of the competition to the children and the schools involved.
“It’s good to see our tamariki involved in the performing arts arena where they are excelling. Their self esteem and
confidence is raised considerably when they participate in events like this.” said organising committee member Poto
Stephens-Dunn.
“Their commitment shows with all the effort put into practices beyond the regular school times allotted. They build a
great sense of pride and accomplishment from the practices right through to performing in front of their family and
friends.”
Council granted $5,000 towards the event, and is also assisting with the event infrastructure such as staging, sound and
parking. Toi o Manukau co-ordinator, Chantelle Whaiapu is keen for the community to get behind the event and support
their children.
“Entry is just $2 for adults, $1 for children and free for under fives. We’d love to see lots of people at the Sports
Bowl, enjoying what these kids have achieved and the spectacle of kapahaka” she says.
