Waikato wins bid to host Games

Waikato University will host next year's usit BEYOND Travel University Games.
It is expected that over 2,500 students will flock to Hamilton next Easter for the prestigious annual tournament.
In announcing Waikato's winning bid, Darel Hall, President of University Sport New Zealand said “Waikato's enthusiasm and excellent facilities will ensure an excellent competition”.
The Games should also reap rewards for Hamilton retailers. This year's Games in Dunedin saw an estimated $700,000 pumped into the local economy by visiting students.
The Games will be run by
University Sport New Zealand, who will later this year
appoint an Event Manager to oversee the organisation of the
Games.
University Club Development Officer, Tracey Hampstead is thrilled with the announcement.
"The University's range of sporting and cultural facilities perfectly complement Hamilton's existing venues. The picturesque University campus is the perfect venue for an event such as this. I believe all the athletes will be impressed when they see how Hamilton hosts next year's Games," she said.
"All those involved here at the University of Waikato look forward to working with University Sport New Zealand to ensure that the 2002 Games set a benchmark for all future competitions."
The Games brings together some of New Zealand's best up and coming, as well as New Zealand representative athletes for three days of competition.
