No Florida Fiasco For New Zealand Trustee Elections
While the Americans are having nightmares with their presidential elections, the organisers of New Zealand’s biggest democratic event are confident of a dream run for their upcoming elections.
The American presidential race involves a handful of candidates but in New Zealand, twenty thousand candidates are expected to put their names forward to stand for the trustee elections early next year.
National election co-ordinator Janet Kelly says that compared to other countries, and to other elections, this is a monumental event.
“In New Zealand one in every hundred adults actually stands for the election. – per capita that is huge. And when you add into the equation that it involves all of our 2,650 schools and the vast number of parents and caregivers with children attending school it adds up to an amazing undertaking.”
Janet Kelly says just like the American presidential race, it has enormous impact on voters.
The trustee election campaign has just kicked off and the country’s 2,650 schools need to find 14,000 people to stand as trustees. These trustees will be serving on boards that govern schools, determining the way they are run, for a period of three years.
“The past four elections has shown that New Zealanders are more than willing to show their commitment to our children and to education and take on this crucial role.”
Janet Kelly says the American public seems to be bored with the Florida stalemate that sees Al Gore and George W. Bush waiting in the wings for the election result.
“There are reports of some Americans banning conversation about the elections – they just don’t want to talk about it any more. However, in New Zealand we want everyone to talk about ours and to think about standing when nominations open on February 28.”
Janet Kelly says and election support team is already in place – and she promises a smooth and efficient election process.
