Promise Of A New Dawn For Pacific Students
Albany Students' Association
Pacific Islands Students will receive a long overdue increase in support, by Tertiary Institutions, due to newly released Government initiatives.
The new funding package is aimed at increasing the support by Tertiary Institutions, for Pacific Islands and Maori students. Not only will Pacific Islands and Maori students benefit from this injection of funds, but also the Tertiary Institutions themselves. The institutions that provide the better services will receive the greater numbers of Pacific Student enrolments.
"The Government has today released a promise of a new dawn for Pacific Islands Students" said Maria Cavanagh, Pacific Islands Students' Representative, Albany Students' Association.
A commitment of 18 million dollars, (over a four-year period) has come from Government as a response to the equity issues faced by Pacific Islands and Maori Students. This package is a step in the right direction for the future of New Zealand.
Funding will be introduced from the 2001 academic year. The precise date for the availability of this funding is yet to be confirmed.
