USNZ welcomes Waikato compulsory result

Published: Tue 24 Oct 2000 08:58 AM
University Sport New Zealand President, Mathew Brown, welcomed the vote by Waikato students to reinstate a compulsory student association.
"Voluntary student unionism was really the politics of destruction at Waikato", he said.
"The founders of the movement reduced the capacity of Waikato students to participate in national and international sporting competition. They had nothing and proposed nothing to replace the opportunities provided by University Sport.
"Waikato student have been lucky that their university took a constructive approach to the situation, stepping in to ensure Waikato students received opportunities.
"It takes years to build and sustain the largely voluntary networks that makes University Sport work. It takes very little time to destroy them.
"USNZ looks forward to working closely with WSU and Waikato University in rebuilding its campus sporting culture and regaining their traditional place in the top tier of competitive sporting campuses".
