'Wairangi, The Waters' From Huia X Devin Abrams, A Pacific Future Bass Wave Tune, UK & Canada Gigs
Shaped in a collaborative flow of lyrics and music, this tune blends electronic Pacific rhythms in both te reo Māori and English. The song explores the reflections between the moana (ocean), humanity, and mana wahine. It showcases the synergy of Huia's lyrical storytelling and Abrams' innovative, lush soundscapes.
Sonically, the waiata (song) evokes the feeling of being immersed in a ngaru (wave). This reflects the swells and lulls of life. The waiata also touches upon the value of the ‘Ikura, the precious flow of the whenua (womb), symbolising the beginning of all human life.
Huia's music is often described as "electronic with spirit", fusing sounds of nature with electronic elements. The work is a conscious lyric journey, connecting global listeners with te reo Māori and indigenous perspectives. Known for her vibrant stage presence and dynamic live performances, Huia's music flows from ambient sonics through to liquid Drum and Bass.
This release follows previous singles, KAWAKAWA (Medicine), WAKA HUIA (Knowledge), which reached #1 on the Ethnocloud charts and have over 40,000 views on YouTube and TĪAHO AHO (light) It's an electro R'n'B mash about empowerment.
WAIRANGI, THE WATERS is part of Huia's ongoing KAWAKAWA album project, a year-long initiative with a new single and video as a capsule released before the full album release in August 2025.
Huia is also the driving force behind HūHā Music, an initiative launched in late 2024 to create global pathways for te reo Māori musicians. She advocates and creates collaborative music community projects, participates in international Indigenous music panels and mentors bilingual Māori Artists and Producers.
