New Zealand SailGP Team To Go Head-to-head With The Duchess Of Cambridge In Plymouth
Peter Burling and Blair Tuke take on their toughest opponent, Her Royal Highness
New Zealand sporting royalty meets Commonwealth royalty as the New Zealand SailGP Team goes head-to-head with Great Britain and the Duchess of Cambridge in a historic F50 clash in England next weekend.
SailGP, the adrenaline-fueled racing championship, is heading to Britain's Ocean City, Plymouth, on 31 July to 1 August 2022 (NZT) where Her Royal Highness will join in on the action in a friendly ‘Commonwealth Race’ between the Kiwis and the host nation on the second and final day of the event.
Racing one-on-one against New Zealand in identical, foiling F50 catamarans, Her Royal Highness will join Sir Ben Ainslie’s British crew, while the New Zealand SailGP Team will be helped out by their own guest racer, endurance swimmer and UN Patron of the Ocean, Lewis Pugh.
With Peter Burling in the driver’s seat and Blair Tuke as Wing Trimmer, the Duchess will have tough competition as crews battle it out at speeds up to 50 knots (100 km per hour).
During her visit, the Duchess, who is Royal Patron of the 1851 Trust, will also meet with young people taking part in the Trust’s activities to promote sustainability, and get a taste of the incredible speed and skill involved in the global league.
