A New Annual Exhibition That Puts Artists In The Frame
A group exhibition where each artist is the subject of another artist’s work - like links in a chain.
The audience will follow the artworks around the exhibition to see how each artist has painted, photographed and created work of another artist. This exhibition shines a light on the artists and puts them in the frame as the subject.
The first annual exhibition features established and emerging artists from Tāmaki Makaurau and broader Aotearoa New Zealand, including: Naomi Azoulay, Lucie Blaze, Gavin Chai, Abhi Chinniah, Paul Darragh, Mariadelle 'Abbey' Gamit, Lindsey Horne, Téhlor-Lina Mareko, Riley Martinez, Stjohn Milgrew, Sara Moana, Logan Moffat and Vicktoria Johnson.
The exhibition aims to achieve the following outcomes:
Artist connections - Covid-19 has meant that it has been difficult for artists to connect with one another and with their audiences. Connections through events and exhibitions have been limited and delayed. This exhibition and the collaborative process connects artists together through the chain-link process.
Shining a light on artists – Often behind the scenes, behind the camera and behind the canvas, artists themselves are not often in the spotlight. This exhibition places the artists in the frame as the key subject matter.
Supporting a diverse range of artists - The exhibiting artists are a diverse cohort; diverse not only in age and ethnicity but also artistic disciplines and experience.
The exhibition includes a range of diverse artists spanning from younger, emerging artists through to more established, mature artists. They are an ethnically diverse cohort, including those who identify as Māori, Samoan, Chinese, Pākehā, Sri Lankan, Filipino, Czech and Middle Eastern.
Artists on Artists partnered with Āhua Collective and a number of Āhua’s collective artists who identify as being part of the rainbow community are represented in the group exhibition.
The exhibiting artists are also diverse in their art practices and mediums. From traditional painters and photographers through to digital media artists, illustrators and collagers.
Audiences can take part – Alongside the exhibition, art enthusiasts can take part in a drawing and art-making event. In line with the Artists on Artists exhibition, a free public event where participants can be both the artist and the subject. Easels are placed in a circle and each person draws someone else in the circle - a chance to hone life drawing and art making skills and meet fellow artists and art enthusiasts.
