Damning New Article About New Zealand Rodeo Cruelty Hits UK Media

New footage from this year’s Winchester and Methven rodeos was published by the Independent yesterday. The footage shows bulls strapped with irritating flank straps bucking wildly, and calves lassoed by so-called ‘cowboys’ on horseback, then thrown to the ground, before being tied by their legs.

The article links the meat, dairy and wool products that the British buy from New Zealand to the same farmers who bully and abuse animals in rodeo events.

SAFE spokesperson Will Appelbe said the UK is now aware that New Zealand still allows these cruel practices to continue, and what they as consumers are supporting by purchasing these products.

"We know that rodeo events inflict fear, panic and pain on animals. Rodeo is animal cruelty. It’s not who we are as a nation, and it’s now become a risk to our reputation."

While rodeo organisers are marketing the events as ‘family-friendly,’ many are actively seeking a ban, as rodeo events promote bullying and glorify violence.

In 2017, the Labour Party promised to ban the use of calves under 12 months of age, bucking straps, electric prods and rope burning at rodeo events.

"The Labour Party have an overwhelming mandate to move forward on their promises, including this one. We have a new cabinet now, and the reinstatement of the Minister responsible for Animal Welfare, Meka Whaitiri."

"With our British cousins watching closely, it’s time for the new Labour Government to act."
