Join us for the first of our Double Talk lunchtime conversations as Double Take curator Ane Tonga speaks with Nick Netzler and Sean Mallon. Tonga and Netzler share an interest in the medium of photography and the spaces—physical or otherwise—where gendered experience and culture meet.
Ane Tonga (Vaini, Kolofo’ou) is interested in photography’s ability to shape our understanding of gender, place and cultural nuance. Her recent exhibitions include The Devil’s Blindspot: Recent Strategies in New Zealand Photography, Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū (2017) and Ane Tonga: Men are from Maama, Women are from Pulotu, Māngere Arts Centre Ngā Tohu o Uenuku (2016).
Nick Netzler is an artist with an extensive knowledge of colonial photography in the Pacific. He exhibited inUnsere Neuen Lansleute (Our New Countrymen)—a solo show of images taken in twentieth-century German Samoa, selected and reproduced by Netzler—at Lopdell House Gallery in 2002. He has also been involved in a number of collaborative projects, including The Other Day in Paradise exhibition hosted by The Den sex shop, Auckland (2003), and Measina Fa’a Fafine: The Third Eye, The Third Space, Artstation (2007). Nick Netzler has recently has been working in partnership with The Museum of Samoa supporting restoring historical photographs in their collections.
Sean Mallon, of Sāmoan (Mulivai, Safata) and Irish descent, is the current Senior Curator Pacific Cultures at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. He recently co-authored Tatau: A Cultural History of Samoan Tattooing (Te Papa Press, 2018), Art in Oceania: A New History (Thames & Hudson, 2012), andTangata o le Moana (Te Papa Press, 2012).
