Hawke’s Bay Sports Awards on track to be biggest yet

Time is running out to secure your ticket to the 2019 Forsyth Barr Hawke’s Bay Sports Awards.

Close to 450 tickets have already been sold for the regional event held at Pettigrew.Green Arena in Taradale on Saturday May 26 – closing in on the record numbers attending the 2018 event which saw Aimee Fisher claim a second Hawke’s Bay Sportsperson of the Year title.

Sport Hawke’s Bay Commercial Manager, Ryan Hambleton said “it is great that we have had such great support from the commercial and sport sector for the 2019 event. We have had great support from new sponsors such as Forsyth Barr and Stirling Sports while having ongoing support from the likes of Nimon & Sons and Tremains to name a few. Without their support we wouldn’t be able to host an event such as this.”

“We are looking forward to hosting what is looking likely to be the largest celebration of sporting achievement with just under two weeks remaining for people wanting to secure their tickets to mix and mingle with the region’s sporting elite.”

“Across the region we have had some outstanding achievements on a local, national and international level. The awards are always a special occasion that bring the sporting community together to also recognise those that freely give their valuable time to contribute to sport and recreation.”

In an exciting announcement, well known television personality, Peter Williams will MC the 51st edition of the regional awards. The TVNZ stalwart, Williams retired after 40 years in television at the end of 2018. Starting off as a rugby league commentator in 1979, he retired after an illustrious career having covered seven Olympic Games, five Commonwealth Games, three Rugby World Cups, two Cricket World Cups and two Masters Golf Tournaments.

Mr. Hambleton said The Hits People’s Choice Award with finalists Brad Weber (rugby union), Jarrod Kenny (basketball) Emma Twigg (rowing) and Rosemary Mair (cricket) will no doubt again draw a large voter turnout once promotion begins in the coming days.

Another feature of the evening will be the induction of another sporting legend to the Hawke’s Bay Sports Hall of Fame. Current Tall Black coach and former Napier Boys’ High School and Hawks legend, Paul Henare will be inducted.

Ticket sales close Sunday 19th May with tickets available from www.hbsportsawards.co.nz or the Sport Hawke’s Bay head office at Pettigrew.Green Arena. Tickets are $95 per seat or $900 for a table of ten and includes a three-course meal from Orton Tailored Cuisine with drinks provided by Zeelandt Brewery, Vidal Estate and Three Wise Birds cider.
