Aroha Quartet 2019 season to cover ten centres in twelve concerts
The Aroha String Quartet has announced its 2019 season.
The Wellington-based Aroha Quartet will perform three programmes in twelve concerts across ten centres around New
Zealand.
Their ‘Metamorphoses’ programme begins the year with concerts in Rotorua on 2 May, Wellington on 7 May, Palmerston North
on 8 May and Putaruru on 12 May. It opens with Mozart's high-spirited 'Hunt’ Quartet and Ligeti's exhilarating String
Quartet No 1 'Métamorphoses nocturnes', finishing with the profound String Quartet No 13 in B-flat Op 130 by Beethoven,
a piece that explores the limits of what can be expressed in music.
In their later programmes, well known pianist Diedre Irons then joins the Aroha Quartet for eight performances of
Brahms' sublime Piano Quintet in F minor. These concerts also include 'Unbound', an expressive, heartfelt work for
string quartet written in 2011 by New Zealand composer Brigid Bisley.
Concerts in Greytown on 30 June, Waikanae on 14 July and Napier on 16 July also include Mozart’s ‘Hunt’ Quartet. The
remaining five concerts - Oamaru on 10 September, Dunedin on 11 September, Palmerston North on 13 November, Auckland on
24 November and Wellington on 1 December - all begin with Haydn’s chirpy String Quartet in C Op 33 No 3 ‘The Bird’.
Acclaimed as demonstrating "accomplished brilliance, soulfulness and sublime intensity in perfect balance and tonal
unity" (The Dominion Post), the Aroha String Quartet is firmly established as one of New Zealand's finest chamber music
ensembles.
Founded in 2004, this versatile Wellington-based quartet is known for its passionate musicality, impressive technique,
and multicultural innovation.
The Aroha Quartet enjoys presenting string quartet works ranging from western classical and avant-garde repertoire to
traditional Chinese folk music, as well as works for larger forces through collaborations with high-profile musicians.
The Aroha Quartet performs regularly around NZ in centres from the Deep South to the Far North. The members of the
quartet are all committed educators.
