New doco series to take on New Zealand’s big decisions

This week, the award-winning Stuff Circuit investigative journalism team launched Big Decision, a new documentary looking at abortion laws in New Zealand.

Released ahead of the most significant development in abortion law in 40 years, Big Decision is the first in a five-part series - called Circuit - made in partnership with NZ On Air and Māori Television.

Stuff Circuit has a reputation for challenging and groundbreaking journalism, including its innovative investigation into New Zealand’s Afghanistan deployment, The Valley, and a recent exposé of modern-day slavery on the high seas, Caught.

Stuff editorial director Mark Stevens says, “The new series would continue Stuff Circuit’s strong track record of probing, uncovering and analysing issues important to New Zealanders.”

Big Decision includes viewpoints from across the arena - those opposed, those pushing for reform, a doctor who carries out abortions, and Justice Minister Andrew Little, who has the job of getting the legislation to Parliament.

Each Circuit story will be built around an in-depth documentary and include supporting digital material on Stuff to provide a more interactive and immersive experience. Each feature video will then be aired on Māori Television, which Stevens said was a perfect fit.

“Stuff Circuit and Māori Television both have a strong and established record of thought-provoking and investigative journalism. This partnership combines Stuff’s extensive digital audience and Māori Television’s significant broadcast viewership to showcase that important work.”

Big Decision and the Circuit series follows a string of notable awards for the team.

Stuff Circuit was named Best Current Affairs Programme at last year’s NZ TV Awards; won the Best Team Investigation at the NZ Voyager Media Awards, and Best Use of Mobile at the Asia-Pacific News Media Awards, both for The Valley; was awarded Most Visually Compelling Story for Caught at the international Shorthand Awards held in March; and has this week received two Voyager Media Awards nominations in the Best Innovation in Digital Storytelling category for Drug Deals and Caught, the latter also nominated for Best Team Video (feature).

Big Decision is available to watch now at www.stuff.co.nz/circuit and will be airing on Maori Television on Sunday April 14 at 10.25pm.
