‘Musterers’ – suggested alternative name for Crusaders

Cheryl Simes, a dog-loving North Canterbury lawyer, suggests the ‘Musterers’ as an alternative to the name ‘Crusaders’.

Musterers are an integral part of Canterbury’s heritage, Simes points out. The name would reflect rural Canterbury as well as the early urban centres. It would recognise the hardy, tough, enduring individuals who could only get their job done by depending on each other and their horses as vital team mates.

The pageantry of horses and riders could remain.

‘Instead of swords, there could be acrobatic border collies, who love to show off,’ Simes suggests.

‘Imagine imagery based on rural headgear, dogs, and indeed sheep – linked naturally to Canterbury’s heritage, economy, and tourism.’

‘It’s time to think through the legitimate needs and interests behind the current debate and work together to find new strategies to meet those needs and interests,’ Simes suggests, referring to a standard approach to dispute resolution.

Simes is the founder of Kiwilaw, an Oxford-based legal practice which helps people to act for themselves in legal proceedings – especially in applications for probate or letters of administration, where Kiwilaw provides a low-cost alternative to standard lawyer services (charging $490 for probate documents, instead of $1200 or more).
