Waiting For Godot by Samuel Beckett - A True Masterpiece

Two homeless men wait on a bare road with a single tree. They are in no particular time or place – nowhere and everywhere. Over two days they argue, get bored, clown around, repeat themselves, and wait. They’re waiting for the one who will never come. They’re waiting for Godot.

“Waiting for Godot is funny, poetic and reveals humanity’s talents for hope, companionship and keeping going,” says director Ross Jolly says about this new production. “It is perfect timing to do it because many individuals are affected by what's happening in the world. So, who, or what, is Godot? A metaphor for every kind of thing you can think of, essentially Waiting for Godot speaks about what it is to be human at the most animal and spiritual level. It leaps off the stage and is hugely emotional, compassionate and funny.

And then of course, there’s the writing and the humour. Samuel Beckett himself said that the laughter and the tears were all that mattered.

Circa Theatre mounted an award-winning production of Waiting for Godot in 1999 and it was a sell-out success. The play seems to have a unique resonance during times of social and political crisis. 20 years later with subtle reconfiguring it resonates again, and another generation can enjoy one of the greatest 20th-century plays.
