Celebrating success in sport for 40 years

Sport Wellington is delighted to announce that for the 40th year, the Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards will recognise achievements and excellence in sport from across the greater Wellington region.
Covering the Wairarapa, Kapiti, Upper and Lower Hutt and all of Wellington, nominations for 2019 are set to open on 27 March. The Awards formal dinner, a night of celebration, entertainment and recognition, will be held on 19 June at TSB Bank Arena.
As well as showcasing high performing sportspeople, the awards shine a light on the administrators, volunteers and officials who all contribute to making sport thrive in communities throughout the greater Wellington region.
“This is your sport’s opportunity to celebrate its victories, recognise your champions, but also to acknowledge and thank the people behind the scenes who help to make it all happen,” said John Grieve, Event Director, Sport Wellington.
“Nominations are welcome from the general public and sports organisations. Please encourage nominations from your board, committees, clubs, managers, officials, coaches and administrators.”
Nominations can be made online at www.wellingtonsportsawards.co.nz for achievement during the period of 12 April 2018 - 17 April 2019, in the following 11 categories: Sportswoman, Sportsman, Disabled Sportsperson, Emerging Sportswoman, Emerging Sportsman, Coach, Team, Club, Official, Volunteer and for the Trish McKelvey Leadership Award.
Nominations close at 12 p.m. on Friday 21 April. Finalists will be announced on Friday 5 May.
The theme for this year’s Award’s dinner is inspired by Matariki, the Maori New Year. Matariki is a time for reflection on the year before, a celebration of rising stars and an opportunity to share stories to guide the personal growth of ourselves and others.
“Using the ideologies from the story of Matariki, we aim to take our finalists, sponsors and attendees on a journey of reflection and celebration, leaving them feeling inspired and determined for the year ahead,” said Grieve.
