“Cuba Through Kiwi Eyes” photo exhibition kicks off this week in Wellington

Wellington, March 25th, 2019.

Commemorating the 20th Anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Aotearoa New Zealand, the exhibition"Cuba through Kiwi eyes" will be running from March 25th – April 1st at the Faculty of Architecture and Design, Te Aro Campus, Vivian St, Victoria University of Wellington.

Cuba and New Zealand, two small and distinct island nations, have developed warm and friendly relations over the last 20 years and managed to acknowledge each other and cooperate in mutually beneficial ways despite the geographical distance.

The exhibition features the best 80 photos from more than a thousand received, from a Cuba photo contest launched by the Cuban Embassy and Havana Coffee Works last November. The contestants, who are all Kiwis or NZ residents that have visited Cuba, were encouraged to send their best images of landscapes, cities, people and culture. The exhibition seeks to portray a Kiwi’s perspective or view of Cuba, through their photographic memoirs of moments and experiences that they captured during their trip to the Caribbean nation.

The venue in Victoria University of Wellington’s creative Te Aro campus is a stone’s throw from the funky, vibrant Cuba St. precinct in Wellington which has famously embraced Cuba over the years through businesses such as Fidels, Floriditas and Havana bar to name a few. The timing of the exhibition also coincides with one of the largest annual events in Wellington’s calendar with the CubaDupa Festival on the 30-31 March.

Alongside Victoria University of Wellington, the Latin American Center for Asia Pacific Excellence (CAPE) has been an important sponsor of this event, proving their relevant role in bringing New Zealanders closer to the Latin American region.

During the week-long exhibition, the Latin American CAPE and the Embassy of Cuba will also be hosting the event “Living la Vida Loca”, apresentation by Geoff Marsland, Managing Director at Havana Coffee Works and Coffee Baron, who will share his stories and experience about doing business in Cuba and Latin America at the exhibition venue.
