What's On at City Gallery Wellington This Week (4-10 March)

Published: Mon 4 Mar 2019 10:42 AM
It’s a really busy week here at City Gallery—we’ve got live performances, screenings, the return of our Book Club, closing exhibitions and Tuatara Open Late.
There’s less than a week left to check out From Scratch: 555 Moons and Cao Fei: #18—both of these summer exhibitions close this Sunday (10 March). Don't miss this opportunity to watch Sonics From Scratch—a documentary portrait of From Scratch's Phil Dadson which takes place on the closing day of the exhibitions (2pm, Sun 10 March).
Our Book Club returns this week at March’s Tuatara Open Late along with a live performance from Orchestra of Spheres—not to be missed! This month’s Tuatara Open Late starts a little earlier at 4pm with a public open rehearsal of From Scratch: Heart’Heart’Heart.
The finale performance of From Scratch: Heart’Heart’Heart has sold out, but due to demand, we’re now releasing tickets to Friday evening’s dress rehearsal.

From Scratch present a finale performance on the closing weekend of 555 Moons, exploring multiple sonic spaces within City Gallery. They perform early and new rhythm works on invented instruments—from slaptubes, drums, and bells to nundrums, sprongs, gloops, fipplewhistles, zitherums, and more. Their performances have been described as ‘among the greatest in any art form to come out of this country’. Come witness a mesmerising performance that is part sculpture, part music, part ritual.
A public open rehearsal of Heart’Heart’Heart takes place on Thursday 7 March at 4–5.30pm, prior to Tuatara Open Late.

This comprehensive documentary portrait of one of New Zealand’s great experimental artists is essential viewing for anyone with even a passing interest in New Zealand art and music. Sonics From Scratch tracks the intersection of Philip Dadson’s art practice, from his early involvement with The Scratch Orchestra in London in the late 1960s, through to the present. The film charts Dadson’s love affair with sound—documenting his career from his beginnings in Napier through to his eventual recognition on the world stage.

Cao Fei: #18
On now until Sun 10 March
Cao Fei is one of China’s leading contemporary artists. She dragged the art world into the virtual world with RMB City (2007–11), a virtual metropolis built and hosted on the online platform Second Life. Her work continues to explore the fluid boundaries between physical and virtual existence, especially as mediated by art, industry, and technology. Please see our website for screening schedule.

From Scratch: 555 Moons
On now until Sun 10 March
From Scratch is New Zealand’s best-known art/music ensemble. Formed in 1974, by Philip Dadson, it draws on aspects of experimental, minimal, and non-Western musics, and on Fluxus, minimal art, and post-object art. From Scratch is known for its invented instruments, its utopian egalitarian politics, and its engagement with the sounds and rhythms of the Pacific.

Yona Lee: In Transit
On now until Sun 24 March
Yona Lee makes large, maze-like installations. Hundreds of metres of stainless-steel pipe are cut and welded to form elaborate linear structures, bisecting and transforming gallery spaces and the activities that take place there. By incorporating a miscellany of surprising urban and domestic fixtures, Lee infuses her pipe structures with an everyday surrealism.
