Everyone's invited to sing the Auckland Arts Festival open
The Auckland Arts Festival (AAF) invites the people Tāmaki Makaurau to come together and sing the 2019 festival open with TIRA, a huge, free opening event taking place in Aotea Square on 7 March.
The massive, outdoor-karaoke, led by superstar musicians Stan Walker, Maisey Rika, Ria Hall and Troy Kingi, will be a chance for people to celebrate the official opening event of the 2019 festival and practise their te reo Māori.
Tira (choir) is a free event designed to gather voices, unite hearts and give Aucklanders and visitors to the city a chance to sing from the same song book, which includes iconic waiata, including a te reo Maori version of Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah.
The performers include one of
Australasia’s most popular recording artists, Stan
Walker, who will be joined by the soulful, festival
favourites Maisey Rika and Ria Hall.
Completing the stellar line-up is actor and
award-winning musician Troy Kingi.
TIRA
is part of Auckland Arts Festival’s new Toitū Te Reo,
which is the organisation’s renewed commitment to the
celebration and normalisation of te reo Māori. Toitū Te
Reo infiltrates many of the AAF performances and events in a
number of ways. Tira is both the official festival
opening event and the first event in the Toitū Te Reo
programme.
