Teams preparing for National Secondary Schools Bowls Champs

Published: Thu 21 Feb 2019 09:38 AM
Pt Chev Bowls Parrots were recently contacted by Steve Watkinson, Rumaki Athletic Director at Nga Puna O Waiorea, in the hope of finding a suitable home for their team to practice ahead of the Auckland Open Pairs Tournament taking place at either Carlton Cornwall Bowls or Remuera Bowling Club on 4 March.
Steve Watkinson, the team's manager, has also entered the team of 8 children, (boys and girls - and all novice bowlers!) into the New Zealand National Secondary Schools Bowls Championships, a pinnacle event on the secondary school’s bowls calendar, which will again be hosted by Carlton Cornwall Bowls on the 26 and 27 March 2019.
The Parrots Junior Community Development Programme will not only provide the team with top quality Greens to practice on, but also professional standard bowls to train with, and then use throughout the Championships (valued at $700 per player!). And whilst the team has its own volunteer manager, the Parrots coaches will be there to provide additional coaching, tips and tricks to guide them on their journey to glory!
Colin Gibbs, Bowls Development Manager at Pt Chev Bowls said: “It was wonderful to be contacted by Steve, and we are delighted to be able to help the team prepare for what is the highlight of the secondary schools bowls competitions. To help and engage with all members of our local community, and to offer flexible support to increase participation in Lawn Bowls is why the programme was set up, so we are very pleased our schools are choosing to use the programme in the way they are. This is the first time Nga Puna O Waiorea have entered any level of bowls competition, and everyone at Pt Chev Bowls wishes them well in their quest for the title!”
Please contact Colin Gibbs at Pt Chev Bowls to arrange any interviews or coverage of the team training, and/or competing at the event.
