Mandela My Life: The Official Exhibition opens at Eden Park
Mandela My Life: The Official Exhibition opens at Auckland’s Eden Park inviting visitors to experience a rare and touching glimpse into the personal life of Nelson Mandela
Mandela My Life: The Official Exhibition opens at 10am on Saturday 13 April at the iconic Eden Park, where in 1981 flour bombs were dropped in protest at the Apartheid regime and the ongoing imprisonment of the future South African president.
The exhibition will provide visitors with a glimpse into the extraordinary personal life of Nelson Mandela. Produced by iEC Exhibitions, Museums Victoria, and TEG Live in full collaboration with The Nelson Mandela Foundation based in South Africa, this brand-new world class exhibition arrives direct from the prestigious Melbourne Museum, exhibiting in Auckland as part of a 5-year worldwide tour.
Expertly curated by a team of Museums Victoria staff headed by iEC Exhibitions’ Samantha Heywood, Mandela My Life: The Official Exhibition features over 200 original artefacts, documents, personal items and artworks from The Nelson Mandela Foundation and Nelson Mandela’s private collection. This is the most comprehensive collection ever to be shown outside of South Africa.
The presentation of this exhibition continues to make vital the legacy of Mandela and his life’s work in today’s world “To change people's attitudes, you need to work hard — through education, through advocacy programs, that's the work the Foundation has been doing." says Sello Hatang, CEO Nelson Mandela Foundation.
New Zealand has a special connection with Nelson Mandela. The high-profile protests of the 1981 Springbok tour are very much a part of our young nation’s cultural heritage and his subsequent visit in 1995 touched the hearts and minds of many.

‘Nelson Mandela had a profound impact on New Zealand. His struggle against apartheid was supported in New Zealand through a mass protest movement that opposed sporting contact between our countries, culminating in major protest events in 1981.’
-- Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern - 2018 Nelson Mandela Peace Summit.
Auckland is the the second destination on the global tour of this stunning exhibition. Destination partner Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) Head of Major Events, Stuart Turner says: “We are delighted to see the addition of this prestigious event to the shoulder season calendar. Mandela My Life: The Official Exhibition has proved hugely successful in Melbourne and now Aucklanders and visitors to the region will have the chance to see this commemorative exhibition at the spiritual home of rugby, Eden Park.”
