The Wellington Jazz
Cooperative proudly presents one of Australia’s most
distinguished bandleaders and tenor sax players, David
Theak, who will be debuting his exciting new project at The
Third Eye on Friday night.
In addition to being a lecturer in the jazz unit at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Theak has been a highly respected composer and bandleader on the Australian jazz scene for over a decade. His original jazz quartet Theak-Tet has toured Australia (2000 and 2006) and Europe (2001 and 2004) and has recorded a number of critically acclaimed CDs featuring his compositions, including Yellow Glasses , Gamla Stan, and Old School, which was recorded in Oslo at the internationally renowned Rainbow Studios.
Theak is also artistic director and lead saxophonist of the acclaimed, seventeen-piece Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, and facilitated a national tour with German pianist/composer Florian Ross in 2006. He has produced two Mothership Orchestra CDs - The Mothership Plays the Music of Mike Nock and Dream Wheel, both of which feature his large ensemble writing.
Mentor to an entire generation of great Australian musicians, Theak has performed concerts at all of Australia's major jazz clubs and festivals (including the Melbourne International Festival and the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz), and at many of Europe's finest jazz clubs such as the Copenhagen Jazzhouse, Stockholm's Jazzclub Fasching, JazzClub Unterfahrt, and the Brussels Jazz Marathon.
Theak has also been featured on dozens of Australian TV shows and albums ny other musicians, and his community involvement includes volunteer work as President and Artistic Director of Sydney's Jazzgroove Association between 1998 and 2001, founder of Jazzgroove Records, and Treasurer for the Sydney Improvised Music Association from 2003 to 2006.
Featuring the young guns of Australian jazz, plus a ring-in Kiwi bass player, his latest band features Theak on tenor sax, Zac Olsen on alto, Tom Avgenicos on trumpet, Josh Meader on guitar, and Alexander Inman-Hislop on percussion.
