Circa Theatre Presents Side by Side by Sondheim
Circa Theatre Presents Side by Side by Sondheim
A
dazzling array of songs celebrating the wit and genius of
musical theatre’s most influential artist, Stephen
Sondheim
Celebrating the
40th anniversary of Circa Theatre’s original production,
Side by Side by Sondheim is full of sparkling lyrics
and exciting music, featuring two grand pianos, and gorgeous
gowns. A finely tuned night out at the theatre.
Performed
by three of New Zealand’s leading international musical
theatre performers Julie O’Brien
(Evita, The Rocky Horror Picture Show),
Matthew Pike (Jesus Christ Super Star,
Cats) and Sarah Lineham (The Sound
of Music, The Phantom of the Opera), and accompanied by
maestros Michael Nicholas Williams and
Colin Taylor in a perfect duel of
musical
talent. Side by Side by Sondheim
celebrates the composer of Broadway successes West
Side Story, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, Company,
Follies, A Little Night Music and
more.
Led by Wellingtons own theatrical
power couple, Side by Side by Sondheim is directed by
Emma Kinane (Outrageous Fortune)
with music directed by Michael Nicholas
Williams. Sometimes hilarious, sometimes
heartbreaking,
Side by Side by Sondheim is a
spectacle of elegance, glamour, sophistication and humour
with heart.
‘This is a dream of a show […] happy,
funny, witty and so compassionate. It makes you feel
good!’ - The New York
Times
Emma Kinane says
“I’m drawn to Sondheim because he doesn’t write simple
characters. They aren’t just good or evil, they’re a
deeply flawed mixture of both. Sondheim explores complexity
– a gift for the actors and audience alike.
As well as
great singers performing gorgeous tunes you love, these
characters are dealing with complicated situations and
feelings; they lie and they dissemble and they are mean to
each other, just like in real life. And like in real life,
they make inappropriate jokes in the middle of serious
situations.”
Side by Side by Sondheim is a greatest hits album of Broadway’s classics and hidden gems. It celebrates one smash hit after another - and each one makes you remember the album or show it came from, and more importantly, the way your life was that summer when it was always on the radio. This show will not only take you back, but it will delight, thrill and entertain you with its classic charm, wit and humour. A glamorous night out on the waterfront with Broadway’s best.
