The Centre of Contemporary Art Toi Moroki (CoCA) is excited to announce the launch of its first publication since
reopening in 2016. Published to accompany the exhibition Geophagy, by Ruth Watson, exhibited at CoCA from December 2017 - February 2018, the publication (of the same name) will be launched at the gallery on Friday the 25th of January.
“Geophagy - Ruth Watson” contains four essays by Allan Smith, Josephine Berry, Rebecca Boswell, and Bruce E Phillips, alongside high quality
images from both the CoCA exhibition and the preceding iteration at Gus Fisher Gallery. Also included are accompanying photos from the Headlands Centre for the Arts, in San Francisco, where Watson created The Surface of Things, one of the video works within the Geophagy exhibition.
“This is the first in a series of monographs, thematic catalogues, and other art-related texts,” says CoCA’s Executive
Director, Romy Willing. “One of our long-term plans is to begin publishing regularly, and we’re delighted Ruth
approached us with the idea of a catalogue. This is a fantastic start to our publishing programme.”
Geophagy was an expansive exhibition, consisting of a large sculptural installation, film works, and photography. It engaged
with politics of environmentalism and social justice, presenting an overwhelming installation in which many different voices and causes vied for visitors’ attention.
“I’m thrilled to have been able to rework what was originally a very ambitious installation into the extraordinary space
of the CoCA Mair Gallery, and now to have four excellent commentators contribute to this catalogue,” says Watson. “It
has been beautifully designed and is a small work of art in itself.”
“Geophagy - Ruth Watson” will be launched on Friday, 25th January, 5.30pm, alongside the opening of two new exhibitions. All welcome.
