FOR SIX DAYS ONLY FRINGE TOWN INVITES YOU TO EMBRACE THE EXTRAORDINARY!
Auckland Live presents
FRINGE TOWN
A six-day Auckland Fringe extravaganza at the historic Auckland Town Hall.
February 19 – 24, 2019
The conventional glory of the Auckland Town Hall is the backdrop for the unexpected as it transforms into a multi-performance destination for Auckland Fringe. The iconic venue will throw open its doors and all the spaces therein for Fringe Town from February 19.
Fringe Town boasts an extraordinary programme featuring Russian provocateurs Pussy Riot, dance by multi award-winning Movement of the Human (Malia Johnston, Eden Mulholland and Rowan Pierce), an all-ages K-Pop Party and a bevy of exciting offbeat acts offering up dance, poetry, music, workshops and ‘out of the box’ experiences.
International performance activists Pussy Riot put Auckland on the map with the NZ premiere of Pussy Riot: Riot Days. This is not just another music gig, it’s a high-octane live accompaniment to Maria Alyokhina’s memoir Riot Days, merging punk, electronica, theatre, documentary footage and protest. One of the collective's original incarcerated members, Maria Alyokhina, will lead the charge for an unforgettable world-class performance that champions rebellion and freedom of expression.
Revered NZ choreographer Malia Johnston (World of Wearable Arts, The New Zealand Dance Company) and creative team Eden Mulholland and Rowan Pierce (Rushes, Meremere), headline Fringe Town withMovement of the Human. Bringing together artists from across Aotearoa the formidable trio reimagine the Auckland Town Hall’s Concert Chamber with a brand-new work that mixes dance, music and light in a part gig/part party atmosphere. Alongside this premiere the company will also host Saturday night party featuring Glass Vaults and Boycrush with Eden Mulholland and run koha workshops with Liana Yew and Rodney Bell.
Topping off the main line-up is the Fringe Town K-Pop Party. Curated by, and featuring Rina Chae who has danced with Beyoncé and Justin Bieber, this is an all-ages event where audiences are encouraged to dress up as their favourite K-Pop star. Featuring dance crews Street Candee and 603 alongside violinist Hannah Lee and singer-songwriter Jua, this will be one helluva electric party experience.
Award-winning performance artist, poet and producer Vanessa Crofskey is the brainchild behind Long Distance Phone Calls, bringing together a talented group of slam poets for a one-off intimate slam poetry performance in the massive Great Hall. With a capacity for only 150 people, audiences will be seated in the top balcony while poets perform new works on stage at the opposite end of the Great Hall. With Grace Teuila Taylor as MC, the incredible line-up features Manu Vaeatangitau (FAFSWAG), Carrie Rudzinski (Ranked 4th in the world at the 2014 Women of the World Poetry Slam), Stevie Davis-Tana, Kyla Dela Cruz, Ngā Puna Ou Waiōrea – Matariki Bennett, Terina Wichman Evans, Arihia Hall and Manaia Tuwhare. This uber-talented crew are sure to provoke and entertain.
Fresh Movement take the Concert Chamber stage for one explosive large cast performance of Māui. This world-famous crew have represented New Zealand at the HHI World Hip Hop Championships in Las Vegas and have taken home multiple national titles.
Fringe Town also provides a home to music – both of the contemporary and classical flavours. Matthew Crawley gets punters in the mood with a curated music programme of indie treats offering live music every night of the season. The APO Young Achievers will also be found on the streets of Fringe Town performing a range of music in both expected and unexpected spaces.
Auckland Live is as proud as punch to present Fringe Town. Says Auckland Live Programmer Anders Falstie-Jensen “This is the first time we have used the Auckland Town Hall for the Fringe Festival, which really emphasizes how popular the festival has become in Tāmaki Makaurau. All the artists involved with Fringe Town are at the top of their game and what they are presenting is truly exceptional and unexpected.”
Fringe Town plays February 19 - 24.
