National Erebus Memorial designers shortlisted
Six designers for the National Erebus Memorial have been selected to proceed to the next stage in which their design will be developed, announced Chair of the National Erebus Memorial Design Panel Paul James.
“We’ve had great interest in this Memorial, with more than 30 firms, designers and artists around the country tendering their interest,” Paul James says.
“The Panel looked at a number of criteria when evaluating the expressions of interest, including the designers’ creative processes, relevant experience and references.
“The next step is for the shortlisted designers to be provided with information from the family members of the Erebus victims, and to develop a concept to submit to the Panel. The designers will present visuals, taking into account financial, environmental and town planning requirements. A preferred design will be announced in May 2019.”
The submissions in the next stage will become anonymous to the Design Panel and will remain so until the final design is selected.
Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage is responsible for creating the National Erebus Memorial, which will be completed in early 2020. A site has been chosen on a lawn area at Auckland’s Dove-Myer Robinson Park / Taurarua Pā, commonly known as the Parnell Rose Gardens.
The Erebus accident of 1979 remains one of New Zealand's worst accidents in terms of loss of life. Find out more about the National Erebus Memorial on the Ministry for Culture and Heritage website.
