An enjoyable season of children’s theatre not to be missed!

29 November 2018

The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate

Tim Bray Productions is delighted to announce its exciting season of children’s theatre shows for 2019. The company is entering its 28th year of bringing entertaining and educational theatre experiences to young people and next year’s line-up is sure to be enjoyed by young and old.

“We’ve gathered together some iconic modern stories which are beloved by children and their parents and teachers alike. Staging these stories will be a creative and imaginative challenge for our design and production team and I can’t wait to see them come to life on stage,” says Artistic Director Tim Bray, QSM.

The season kicks off in April with a favourite Kiwi story - The Man Whose Mother was a Pirate by Margaret Mahy, which is a rollicking and funny pirate adventure. The show tells the story of Sam, an ordinary man who wears an ordinary suit and who works in an ordinary office. But his mother is an extraordinary mother – she’s a pirate and yearns to see the sea again. Hilarity ensues as they head to sea together with lots of opportunities for audience involvement.

Next up in July is the much anticipated We’re Going on a Bear Hunt by Michael Rosen and Helen Oxenbury that has become a classic chant-aloud tale. Follow and join in the family’s excitement as they wade through the grass, splash through the river and squelch through the mud in search of a bear. What a surprise awaits them in the cave on the other side of the dark forest!

For September/October audiences will enjoy The Little Yellow Digger, which is based on the series of children’s picture books by Betty and Alan Gilderdale about the tenacious little digger. When the little yellow digger gets stuck in the mud, a range of bigger diggers are sent to finish the job with entertaining results.

December sees the return of Tim Bray Productions’ beloved Christmas story, The Santa Claus Show ’19. Now in its seventeenth year, it tells the tale of Kelly and Alana who are best friends and decide to write to Santa Claus. But Kelly sends the longest list of things that a child wants for Christmas that Santa has ever seen. Santa flies Kelly to the North Pole so she can learn for herself the true meaning of Christmas.

Each show will take to the stage at the PumpHouse Theatre during 2019 with both an education season during the last week of term and a school holiday season for two weeks. Performance times are 10:30am and 1pm daily for education performances and 10:30am and 2pm for school holiday’s performances. There are also New Zealand Sign Language interpreted performances and audio described performances available for each show.

Season subscriptions for 2019 are now available to book with a $650 prize package to be won by a lucky season subscriber who books before 5pm on 12th December. The prize includes a book of each of the shows courtesy of the Dorothy Butler Children’s Bookshop, two Playmobil playsets and Hairy Maclary sticker books courtesy of Holdson, Superpasses for Rainbows End, as well as the option to have the purchased season refunded or gift a season subscription to a friend of family member.
