Jason Hamon (Ngāti Porou, Uawa, Te-Aitanga-A-Mahaki) is an emerging, fresh kaiwaiata and Kia mau Rā is his first song in te reo Māori. ‘Kia Mau Rā’ is a sweet gritty reggae roots track by Jason Hamon, recorded, mixed, mastered and released through Kog Studio.
Written with Taumaha Rameka, Kia Mau Rā has a universal theme of kotahitanga, which is a kaupapa close to the heart of Jason who works in lots of different artistic mediums to share this message.
From performing solo with guitar at The Rogue Stage and The Waiotapu Folk Festival, to the Coromandel Summer festival with The Situation, and with his sister Huia, Jasons style has an easy light vibe. His music is just like his character, which always carries a strong message and touches on political topics without fear of judgement.
This debut single Kia Mau Rā was supported by Te Māngai Pāho and Kog Studio, and is just a taste of more music on the way.
While on his travels through UK, Europe and Australia, Jason collaborated with Jose Azul and Kevin Mark Trail, popping up in a couple of music videos, including this track from LyricL and another in NZ from Awa.
Jason is currently exploring tikanga Māori in Rotorua and has been working in Whakarewarewa village with the Pounamu and also as a top photographer for local artists and Age awareness campaigns. However, as a singer songwriter is where his energy shines and his raspy sweet vocals and confident guitar style is what defines him from other acoustic artists of Aotearoa.
