Filmmaker and Ara New Zealand Broadcasting School (NZBS) graduate Kyan Krumdieck has added another recognition to his
growing list after being named New Filmmaker of the Year by SPADA (Screen Production and Development Association) following the release of his short film, Repugnant.
The Outlook for Someday, a project supporting young New Zealand film-makers, commissioned Kyan and five other filmmakers to each make a short
film, providing $10,000 and an industry mentor to help bring each project to the screen. The project is funded by NZ On
Air, NZ Film Commission, Te Māngai Paho and The Body Shop.
Repugnant stars Donogh Rees as a woman sweetly attempting to ‘cure’ a pug of his homosexuality. The film also features
Hamish Parkinson and Simon Prast.
As a student at NZBS, Kyan, along with classmate Annabelle Dick, was awarded best student film in the national Show Me
Shorts competition for their eight minute documentary about the encounters of gay and bi-sexual men who use the dating
app Grindr.
Before coming to Ara, Kyan’s feminist film "Peep Show" won the United States' Campus Movie Fest competition and was
accepted into Cannes Film Festival. He is now planning to shoot a new film in Christchurch next year.
The Outlook for Someday is now looking for “the next Kyan”; applications are open from potential Someday Story-tellers
for the 2019 series.
