New Zealand’s Armistice Day 50 cent coin featured at Twickenham over the weekend – used for the ‘coin toss’ that decided the kick-off for the All Blacks vs England game on Armistice Day.
Reserve Bank Governor Adrian Orr said it was great to see the coin’s presence at a game between countries that contributed so much to bringing World War I to an end.
“It was terrific to take a piece of New Zealand currency to the international sports stage over the weekend to mark the end of World War I, a very significant event for all of our countries,” said Orr.
Two million Armistice Day coins have been minted to commemorate the history, service, and sacrifice made by service personnel and their families to bring peace to New Zealand and the world.
Armistice Day 50 cent coins can still be ordered through the NZ Post website or you may just be lucky enough to pick one up in your change, as they are distributed through NZ retailers.
The minting of this coin supports the WW100 commemorations, bringing education and awareness to Armistice Day.
To bring the coin’s features and the story of Armistice to life, a free augmented reality app has been created for iOS (Apple) and Android devices. Scan the QR code with your mobile (just use your camera in iOS) and you’ll automatically be taken to your app store to start the download. The app uses tracking so when you point your phone at an Armistice Day coin (or a picture of one) video and other interactive content will appear for you to explore.
