2019 Sculpture on the Gulf Promising Array of Artists

Next year’s Sculpture on the Gulf on Auckland’s Waiheke Island promises a rich array of established and emerging artists. It will take place March 1 to 24, 2019.

Just 35 minutes from Auckland by Fullers360 ferry, Sculpture on the Gulf offers visitors the chance to experience the power and beauty of large scale contemporary sculpture in a stunning coastal landscape.

Announcing the 26 selected works, Chairperson Caroline Forsyth said the quality of the works submitted to the independent selection panel promises for a stand out event, matching if not rivalling works exhibited in previous events. In addition to the large works to be mounted on the spectacular two kilometre walkway on Waiheke’s Matiatia Headland a small sculpture exhibition will take place at the Waiheke Community Art Gallery.

As widely acclaimed artist Phil Price, who will be again exhibiting in next year’s event, commented: “Sculpture on the Gulf is to Waiheke what the Grand Prix is to Monaco. From the beginning the event gave me the chance to really make something from my kinetic art lark – and it’s become my life. I was able to do something at a level which got me to where I am now”.

Since Sculpture on the Gulf was established in 2003 through the partnership of its founding benefactors and Waiheke Community Art Gallery, it has become New Zealand’s foremost sculpture exhibition and has been called a ‘must see’ attraction by the New York Times.

Waiheke Island will be truly on the must see list for locals, Aucklanders and visitors alike, as Steve Armitage from Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development observed: “This homegrown event provides the chance to showcase local and international talent on the stunning Waiheke Island. Shifting the event to later in summer as well as encouraging visitors to see more of Waiheke when they attend aligns well with the Destination AKL 2025 strategy’s focus around sustainable destination and major events management.”

With the financial support of principal sponsor Perpetual Guardian, Fullers360, Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED), Newstalk ZB, and Foundation North, together with the generosity of patrons, donors and benefactors , the event promises to be a stand out on Auckland’s arts and culture calendar. Visitors will be invited to make a $10 per adult donation towards the cost of the event.
