West Coast trail running champion Ruth Croft is on top of the world after taking out the Golden Trail Series trail
running championship at the final race in South Africa. The series consisted of 6 of the world’s best known mountain
marathons across Europe, the USA and South Africa.
Ruth started the final race in the series, The Otter Trail in South Africa, in the series lead thanks to a phenomenal
season which saw her win the Mount-Blanc Marathon (France) and place at Zegama (Spain) and Sierre Zinal (Switerland).
Ruth grew up at the foot of the Paparoa National Park and found her West Coast heritage advantageous in the dense bush
of the Otter Trail coastal track. Adopting a conservative approach to the mid-section for the race, Ruth finished with
her trademark kick as the trail got steeper and more technical in the latter stages. Ruth powered home strong in the
final 7 km nearly chasing down the eventual race winner Holly Page of the UK, coming in a mere 34 seconds behind Holly
with a finish time of 4 hours:38 min :22 sec. The second place position was good enough to secure the series win.
