Pacific Entrepreneur Redefining Diversity in Fashion

Creators of the Pacific Fusion Fashion Show are transforming the Ambury Regional Park to a high-end fashion catwalk for 45 models strutting the designs of 13 emerging designers.
“This year’s show draws inspiration from Papatūānuku to celebrate this land and the elements of fire, water, earth and air as entities that sustains us, and are also the ultimate source of creative inspiration,”says Pacific Fusion Fashion Show Director and Social Entrepreneur Nora Swann.
From a luxury car dealership to the Otara Shopping Centre, the pop-up fashion event known for out-of-the-box locations will showcase emerging high-fashion designers from Samoa, Cook Islands Tonga, Tokelau, Sri Lanka as well as indigenous designers from Aotearoa and Australia.
“I started this event to provide a platform for emerging Pacific fashion designers to showcase their talents and gain confidence in the process,” says Mrs Swann.
“We’re ‘re-creating’ new norms and experiences for a fashion event. I believe we’ve created something that resonates and connects with a fashion community that might not otherwise have had the opportunity to be involved in other more established fashion events.”
Since it's first event in 2016, the Pacific Fusion Fashion Show has also helped to grow a large talent pool of emerging Maori and Pacific models, some of which have returned each year to gain experience. This year, 45 models will compete for the 2018 Face of Fusion judged by former NZ Idol judge and singer-personality star, Megan Alatini.
Pacific Fusion Fashion Show is made possible by Nora’s volunteer event team and sponsors including South Auckland based marketing agency Bright Sunday, Mai FM, and the Mangere Otahuhu Local Board.
Local Board Chair Lemauga Lydia Sosene says the board is committed to encouraging initiatives that actively showcase creativity, innovation and success.
“The board is very excited to have the opportunity to be a major sponsor of this event in our local board area, as it is another great opportunity to show some of the great talent within our area, as well as expose our community to some world-class fashion designers.”
