St Bede’s CanTeen Run for a Life

The famous (or infamous) Run For A Life is back for its 8th edition. With just 24 hours to go before 200 St Bede's College students, along with 10 pupils from Marian College, and their support crew will cross the starting line at 8.30am tomorrow on the College’s grounds in Christchurch, more than $77K has already been raised.

Highly motivated, rain or shine, they will run more than 500km over five days, in a relay format, to raise awareness and funds for CanTeen New Zealand.

“CanTeen New Zealand has a special place in the heart of St Bede’s and Marian Colleges. Over the past years, we have had students living with cancer, students who have siblings living with cancer, students who have lost parents to cancer and we have lost members of our wider community to cancer,” says St Bede’s teacher and run organiser Rachel Pitcaithly.

“For us, Run For A Life is a personal event. By raising money for CanTeen, we can help support these young people who, every day, face the reality of a life forever changed by cancer,” adds Rachel.

“Run For a Life is a wonderful fundraising event for our organisation,” says CanTeen President Lucy Coombes, who lost her young brother to cancer. “CanTeen doesn’t receive any direct Government support and relies on the community’s generosity. New Zealand’s survival rates for young people with cancer, lags more than 7% behind international comparisons so raising awareness of youth cancer in our communities is key.

“St Bede’s has been a strong supporter to CanTeen and a community pillar for many years and we can’t thank them enough,” adds Lucy.
