Our events calendar is filled with literature and music this week, starting with tonight’s From Luminous Moments to Island Time: The BWB Texts Story, Wednesday’s NZTrio: Braid concert celebrating Suffrage 125, and our WOW tours get underway on Thursday and Friday afternoon with a focus on fashion, protest, and politics with works in the
exhibitions Iconography of Revolt and Arwa Alneami: Never Never Land. You can also join one of our free weekend exhibition tours at 12.15pm on Saturday and Sunday.

From Luminous Moments to Island Time: The BWB Texts Story

The BWB Texts series of ‘short books on big subjects’ now numbers over fty titles and has become an acclaimed source of
dynamic New Zealand non-ction. Join publisher Tom Rennie and BWB Texts authors to celebrate and discuss the journey of
this remarkable imprint.
Participating authors include Mike Berridge, Ralph Chapman, David Hall, Philippa Howden-Chapman, Prue Hyman, Mike Joy,
Kathleen Kuehn, K. Emma Ng, Vincent O’Malley, Max Rashbrooke, and more.
Doors open 5.15pm. Join us for refreshments before the event.

Arwa Alneami: Never Never Land

New Zealand was the first country to give women the vote, making 2018 the 125-year anniversary of women's suffrage. To
mark the occasion, City Gallery presents the work of a woman artist from the most recent country to give women the vote,
Saudi Arabia. Arwa Alneami is a key figure in Saudi Arabian art, exhibiting in and increasingly beyond the Kingdom. Her
very presence as a contemporary artist challenges the restrictions her country places on female self-expression, as does
her work.
Iconography of Revolt

Iconography of Revolt showcases some of the ways revolt and revolution, protest and insurrection, have been pictured in
art, film, and elsewhere, from the Bolsheviks to the Black Panthers to Pussy Riot, from the barricades to the catwalk.
It asks how images of revolt challenge us, but also how they have been absorbed into culture.
SODA_JERK: TERROR NULLIUS

TERROR NULLIUS scrambles excerpts from canonical Australian cinema, queering it, to create a perverse political-revenge fable that
unwrites Australian national mythology. The film is part political satire, part eco-horror, part road movie.
Cross-referencing the ill treatment of the land’s original owners with that of refugee ‘queue jumpers’, Dominique and
Dan Angeloro mount their critique of the Australian underbelly with a sensibility so juvenile, so larrikin, and,
paradoxically, so Australian.
