Special exhibition dedicated to the founder of Poland’s Independence available in Auckland
Showcasing the visions and actions of one of the main creators of Poland’s Independence. Starting as the most eminent representative of the ‘rebellious’ generation, he first was in the socialist movement and then moved in the ranks of the Riflemen and legionaries, where he strived to put Poland back on the map. A display dedicated to Józef Piłsudski is currently open at the Auckland War Memorial Museum.
Józef Piłsudski occupies a unique place in the national memory of Poland as the first Polish Marshal, builder of the independent Polish Republic, icon of Polish national liberation traditions and a true statesman. The memory of him connects generations of Poles in various parts of the globe. The exhibition was created in cooperation with the Józef Piłsudski Museum in Sulejówek, Poland. Its main goal is to show the Marshal's figure through the prism of universal values - efforts to ensure security in Europe, the fundamental right of all states to self-determination and the fight for social rights such as general employee insurance or women's voting rights. The exhibition is organised by the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Wellington together with the Auckland War Memorial Museum on 100th anniversary of Poland’s regained Independence. A few weeks ago the display was visited by the President of Poland Andrzej Duda and the New Zealand Governor General Patsy Reddy.
The exhibition ‘Józef Piłsudski. A Polish and European statesman’ is available at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, Pou Maumahara Gallery, level 2 until the end of September.
