Dave Wilson Quintet at Wellington's Pyramid Club

Wellington Jazz Meetup Presents the Dave Wilson Quintet

If you’re looking for a fresh new jazz sound, then come on down to the Pyramid Club on Thursday night and check out some great music with the Dave Wilson Quintet, fresh from their recent astounding performance at the Wellington Jazz Festival.

Exploring modes of composition and improvisation flowing out of bebop, modal jazz, the avant-garde, and the maqam improvisation traditions of the Middle East, their music folds together layers of time and space inspired by the sounds of human and natural environments. The multifaceted musical experiences of the musicians come together in Wilson’s compositions, each layer of sound generating a new setting for the expression of styles inspired by musicians from Elis Regina to Eric Dolphy, from John Coltrane to Umm Kulthum.

The quintet will play new compositions alongside the group’s developing material - fresh music grounded in notions of rhythmic, modal, and melodic overlap and interplay.

Featuring a stellar lineup of Callum Allardice on guitar, Luther Hunt on drums, Mike Taylor on trumpet, and Chris Beernink on bass, the Quintet brings together some of New Zealand’s most exciting young musicians. Hear them daringly weave together the vibrant strands of their local and international experiences in jazz and popular music.
