HERA - Everyday Goddess Celebrates Girls Being Active

HERA - Everyday Goddess Celebrates Girls Being Active with New Campaign Launch

With the aim to empower 10 to 18-year-old girls to be active, HERA - Everyday Goddess (HERA) is launching a new social media campaign under the banner #HERAhustle, running from 6 to 30 September.

Funded by Sport New Zealand, Aktive - Auckland Sport & Recreation (Aktive), Auckland Council and New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT), HERA is an Aktive-led project that takes a participant-led approach to engaging girls in sport and recreation in Auckland. The upcoming associated social media campaign is a celebration of girls sharing physical activity experiences and encouraging others to do the same.

Dr Sarah Sandley, Chief Executive Officer, Aktive says HERA’s vision is for Kiwi girls to build their sense of self-worth and confidence by participating in activity they choose, and the #HERAhustle campaign is set to support this.

"Recent figures indicate just 6% of New Zealand young girls are reaching the recommended levels of activity-. This campaign is all about engaging girls and sharing and celebrating different opportunities for them to enjoy and participate in physical activity," says Dr Sandley.

"We’re partnering with a group of talented and driven young females to help promote confidence in girls in New Zealand and highlight the advantages of maintaining a physical lifestyle. These girls have a love of being active and we want to share that feeling with other Kiwi girls."

For the #HERAhustle campaign, girls are encouraged to get their hustle on by sharing how they enjoy being active, using the campaign hashtag over Instagram and challenging other girls to do the same. Girls can also enter and submit through the HERA website www.heragirls.org.nz/herahustle

A number of ambassadors have put their support behind the campaign including HERA Ambassador World MotoX rider Courtney Duncan, mountain bike racer Jessica Manchester and CrossFit athlete Tegan Bartlett. It also features rising female athletes, many of whom will be competing at the upcoming Youth Olympic games including women’s rugby star Hinemoa Watene and New Zealand netballer Maia Wilson, as well as some Auckland primary school girls.

Supported by CLM - Community Leisure Management and Lululemon Auckland, there are a range of prizes up for grabs including gym memberships, sports vouchers, sweat towels and drink bottles, with the #HERAhustle competition winner receiving a Samsung S9.

Dr Sandley adds: "Girls aged 10-18 years are one of Aktive’s targeted participation groups. HERA is all about putting the needs and interests of the girls we are trying to help to be more active at the centre, with the "HERA girls" themselves shaping the programme. We believe this is an effective way to achieve our goal of girls leading a more active life."
