the Koi Boys Return Home to Shimmy with the APO
Charismatic Kiwi trio The Koi Boys are returning home from their Australia base to present an evening of Motown classics
and contemporary pop hits with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra (APO) in October.
Danny Faifai, Kevin Keepa and Ngahere "Nuz" Ngatai rose to fame after appearing on TV singing competition The Voice Australia. The first trio to perform on the show, they blew the judges away with their rendition of the 1954 rock 'n' roll
classic ‘Shh-Boom’, and became a big hit with fans on both sides of the Tasman. When they were knocked out of the
competition before the finals, the social media sphere erupted in outrage.
With a repertoire that spans Motown, funk, R ‘n’ B, pop and even cabaret, The Koi Boys never fail to delight audiences with their smooth harmonies, slick moves and subtle humour.
For almost a decade, the all-singing, all-dancing trio have performed a regular live set – ‘Sunday Session’ – in
Australia’s Gold Coast. The event has become so popular it sells out weeks in advance.
Their debut album, Meant To Be, was released in 2016 and, as well as achieving platinum status, it won Highest Selling Album at the 2017 Vodafone Music
Awards. It is a menagerie of songs with one ambition: to entertain, because that is at the heart of everything The Koi
Boys do. It’s the reason their cover of Meghan Trainor's ‘All About That Bass’ has racked up over a million views on
YouTube. Their second album, Shake It, was released in 2017.
With the APO, The Koi Boys will perform a long list of hit numbers including their famous ‘Shh-Boom’ and ‘Meant to Be’,
as well as other superb arrangements, from Drake’s ‘Hotline Bling’ to Sam Cooke’s ‘Change is Gonna Come’.
Conductor David Kay says, “2018 has been an outstanding year for the APO with regard to its collaborations with
contemporary artists, and this concert will be another example of the diversity of the orchestra. The Koi Boys’ style is
smooth, energetic and funny with a dash of improv, so it’s going to be a very entertaining night.”
Shh-Boom! APO and The Koi Boys will raise the roof of Auckland Town Hall for one night only, Thursday 18 October.
