Improv Mob’s Effing Funny Fundraiser for ONEONESIX
Whangārei theatresports® troupe The Improv Mob are kicking off a series of fundraising events at ONEONESIX to help fund
the operation of the community arts space.
An evening of improv comedy theatre will be held on September 22, with money raised from a licensed bar and ticket
sales.
Improv Mob organiser Michael Botur said a previous show held in July sold out and filled up the venue, so collaborating
again with ONEONESIX seemed a natural fit.
Improvisation – improv for short – is a form of live theatre in which the scene, characters, dialogue and plot are made
up on the spot. The art form dates back decades and was made famous by the TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway?
The Improv Mob has been having fortnightly jam sessions at ONEONESIX since the start of the year and hope to gather more
members. The group was formed in Whangārei in 2016.
“Improv/theatresports fills in the space between stage plays and stand-up comedy,” Botur said. “People love late night
improv because you can talk to the performers, interact in some scenes, and it’s high-energy, fast-paced stuff, very
lively. Every scene is over within a few minutes, and our quick-witted MC maximises the laughs.”
The September 22 fundraiser runs 7-9pm. Food will be provided by chef Amber Wallace and ONEONESIX volunteers will
operate the bar.
The event is strictly R18.
Other fundraisers running in the last quarter of the year are expected to include several live music performances
highlighted by a solo gig from Robert Scott of The Bats and The Clean.
Company of Giants, which runs ONEONESIX, relies heavily on volunteer hours for building maintenance, administration,
communication and management. Company of Giants founder Laurel Devenie said all hall rental hire and fundraising
proceeds go straight back into continuing to build the space and look after the building.
“It’s exciting that The Improv Mob are coming on board,” Devenie said. “They’re becoming an important part of the space.
There’s a big audience for live comedy here which we previously haven’t really catered for.”
