Please join us for the second of our lunchtime talks in response to the artists currently exhibiting in The earth looks upon us / Ko Papatūānuku te matua o te tangata at Adam Art Gallery Te Pātaka Toi. Artist and current Head of Whiti o Rehua School of Art, Huhana Smith, responds to
the work of Ana Iti.
Dr Huhana Smith is a visual artist, curator and researcher who engages in collaborative, trans-disciplinary, kaupapa
Māori/action-research and environmental projects with her iwi and hapū. She has investigated freshwater decline for
Māori waterways/coastal lands and related biodiversity. More recently, her teams are addressing climate change concerns
for coastal Horowhenua to Kāpiti regions in Māori land tenure. Smith actively encourages the use of mātauranga Māori
methods within the sciences and her art practice oversees this engagement. She uses visual and design systems to
represent complex issues with the aim of making solutions more accessible for local communities.
