The Walters Prize 2018 exhibition, showcasing the finalists for New Zealand’s prestigious contemporary art award, opens to the public Saturday 18 August at Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki.
The Walters Prize presents an exhibition by four artists who have been nominated for their outstanding contribution to contemporary art in New Zealand. The nominees have been selected by an independent jury of art professionals and the winner will be determined by an international judge.
Artists were nominated for the following works:
• BAD VISUAL SYSTEMS, 2016 by Ruth Buchanan
• The Making of Mississippi Grind 2017, 2017 by Jacqueline Fraser
• Whol Why Wurld, 2017 by Jess Johnson and Simon Ward
• Fāgogo, 2016 by Pati Solomona Tyrell
Each of the four finalists have redeveloped or expanded their nominated work for the Prize exhibition.
The winner will receive NZD$50,000, while all four finalists receive NZD$5,000.
