Free Film Festival celebrates Latin American and Spanish Cultures in New Zealand.
The 2018 Latin America and Spain Film Festival (LASFF) opens in Wellington on 5 September, celebrating the strong ties and relationships between New Zealand, Spain and Latin American nations.
The LASFF brings together 11 participating countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, Spain and Uruguay) with Mexico taking the role of this year’s coordinator. In the case of countries that do not have an Embassy in Wellington, diplomats based in Canberra are supporting the Festival. In partnership with New Zealand’s Latin America Centre of Asia-Pacific Excellence (CAPE), the Ambassadors are pleased to bring to this country distinguished Mexican director Roberto Girault for a series of public lectures and other events during the first week of screenings.
A specially selected collection of films in a variety of genres will be presented, with the main goal being to bring New Zealand’s audience closer to the history, culture and social developments of Latin America and Spain, through the work of each country’s fascinating local film industry.
Films will be shown over the next three-and-a-half months at twelve different New Zealand venues: Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Kapiti Coast, New Plymouth, Palmerston North, Queenstown, Taupo, Waiheke Island, Wellington and Whanganui. The support of our generous sponsors and local communities, including a number of Latin American & Spanish groups, has been invaluable in bringing this project to fruition.
While the Festival represents a home-away-from-home experience for many cinema goers, for a growing audience it provides a virtual opportunity to learn about, experience or revisit other cultures. It also gives speakers or new learners the opportunity to submerge themselves in Spanish or Portuguese languages - with subtitles of course! All films are screened free of charge.
