A short film capturing Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō’s customary tuna harvest at Lake Rotoroa has been selected to screen at this year’s Top of the South Film Festival.
Commissioned by Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō and filmed and edited by iwi member Keelan Walker, Tuna Harvest will show as part of Gold Reel screenings in Blenheim, Kaikōura and Nelson.
The customary tuna harvest is an important kaupapa for Ngāti Apa ki te Rā Tō, and takes place each year in August ahead of the Hui a Tau.
Cultural Advisor Kiley Nepia said it was awesome to have the film showcased to a wider audience.
“The purpose of filming the wānanga was to archive it and promote our kaupapa within the iwi, so to have it recognised in a wider forum is just magic and helps lift our profile.”
Screenings take place in Nelson on September 15 at the Suter Theatre, in Blenheim on Saturday, October 6 at the ASB Theatre, and in Kaikōura at Kaikōura Museum on Saturday, November 10, Tickets will be available on Ticketek.
And for those not in Te Tauihu who can't make it, you can watch it here.
