Auckland War Memorial Museum and Auckland Art Gallery announce line-up for Cultural Festival 2018
For immediate release
Thursday 2 August 2018
Auckland War Memorial Museum in partnership with Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki will present the Cultural Festival 2018, a celebration of the vibrant art and culture of Auckland’s local Asian Communities, the weekend of Sat 25 – Sun 26
August.
Over the festival weekend, visitors can enjoy over 70, free, drop-in activities, demonstrations, and performances
showcasing ancient traditions through to modern cultural innovations at both Auckland Museum and Auckland Art Gallery.
From hands-on activities, crafts, and games to special music and dance performances, there will be something for
everyone.
Take part in language lessons, calligraphy and paper cutting workshops, sushi demonstrations, and traditional tea
ceremonies. Be inspired by wonderful performances of the guzheng, an ancient Chinese instrument, a Japanese Taiko
drumming team, and a Lion dance team. Enjoy Japanese films, a cosplay parade, martial arts, and see Japanese sweet maker
Kei Miyazawa, at work.
Craig Goodall, Acting Director at Auckland Art Gallery, says "Auckland Art Gallery is excited to join Cultural Festival
2018 as an organising partner and to help support and grow a festival that brings together Auckland’s many diverse
community groups."
Tim Hart, Director of Public Experience at Auckland War Memorial Museum, agrees "We are looking forward to providing a
compelling experience and greater connection to our communities of Tāmaki Makaurau through our collaboration with
Auckland Art Gallery."
Auckland Museum and Auckland Art Gallery both want to acknowledge the tremendous support from Auckland’s Asian
communities to make this festival possible.
Come along and enjoy the rich traditions of Auckland’s diverse Asian cultures at the Cultural Festival 2018, presented
in collaboration with Auckland Art Gallery and community groups city-wide.
