Auckland to face Rotorua in their first game of the New Zealand Top 10 Roller Derby Championships
To kick off their 2018 New Zealand Top 10 game series, the Auckland Bolts will be hosting the rockin’ Rotorua roller derby crew on Saturday 21st July.
The New Zealand Top 10 Roller Derby Championships is an annual event that consist of ten of the best teams across New Zealand, from Auckland all the way to Dunedin. Throughout the season all participating teams play their hardest and smartest in effort to obtain the No. 1 title. In this upcoming bout on home turf, the Bolts of Auckland Roller Derby League (ARDL) will start their Top 10 campaign by taking on Rotorua’s Sulphur City Steam Rollers (SCSR).
The Bolts and the Steam Rollers last met in October 2017 when ARDL took the win. Since then ARDL have participated in the largest roller derby tournament in the southern hemisphere, The Great Southern Slam, which was held this past June in Adelaide. During this whirlwind of a weekend ARDL played five hard-fought games against different teams from across Australia and emerged 4th overall in their division of 21 teams and were the highest placing team from New Zealand. However, both teams have been honing skills and mastering strategies for the past few months and it could be anyone’s game.
“It’s always a pleasure playing these tough and talented women. They give everything on the track! They have been training hard since we last played and I’m sure both teams will be fighting their hardest to keep the score close,” said Anna Benedikter, one of the 2018 ARDL Team Captains.
The game will be held at ActivZone, 30 Downing Street, Glenfield, Auckland on Saturday 21st July. Doors open at 5:30 pm and first whistle is at 6:00 pm. Tickets will be available at the door for $5 and children 12 and under are free.
If you want to be part of the action next time around check out our upcoming rookie intake which begins on Monday 30 July, and continues every following Monday, at the Glenfield ActivZone from 6:45 – 8:30 pm.
