Photographer of the Year 2018 — open for entries

Published: Tue 3 Jul 2018 11:33 AM
Take a photo, dazzle a nation, win fame and fortune.
Now in it’s tenth year, the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year remains the nation’s most popular, richest and most prestigious photographic competition and exhibition. Each year, thousands of entrants present their finest frames and vie for $5000 in cash prizes and an expedition cruise as New Zealand Geographic’s photographer to the subantarctic islands.
“After ten years running this competition, it’s become obvious that the notoriety of winning has become every bit as valuable to photographers as the cheques,” says James Frankham, publisher of New Zealand Geographic and convener of judges. “Finalists have been propelled to fame on our social media channels and careers have been built off the back of a category win. It’s extraordinary to see photographers who have come through the competition now practicing professionally.”
This year, finalist images will be broadcast nationwide across Adshel’s digital advertising network—a distributed exhibition beaming into Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton and Tauranga town centres.
Entries are open across six categories, some featuring new sponsors to the family: Electric Kiwi Wildlife category, Resene Landscape category, Panasonic Lumix Timelapse category, Adshel Society category, Progear Photo-story category, and the Peak Design Aerial category. All entrants will compete for the overall Nikon Photographer of the Year award, the Resene Colour award, and for entrants under the tender age of 25, the Young Photographer award.
