Finalists announced for 2018 Parkin Drawing Award
Drawing is certainly alive and well in New Zealand with a high standard of entries received for the 2018 Parkin Drawing Award. The competition attracted an impressive 463 entries, of which 72 have been selected for the short-list*.
The national drawing competition, attracting a major prize of $20,000, was launched by philanthropist and arts patron, Chris Parkin six years ago. Ten highly commended prizes worth $500.00 each will also be awarded to artists as an added incentive.
An advisory panel, consisting of John Gow, Director of Gow Langsford Gallery, highly regarded art curator and writer Emma Bugden and Darryn George, a renowned artist of Ngāpuhi descent, spent hours assessing hundreds of entries before coming up with the short-list.
The shortlisted works will be showcased at the Parkin Drawing Prize exhibition at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts (17 July to 19 August 2018) and the winning submission will be selected and announced by internationally regarded New Zealand painter Kelcy Taratoa at the opening of the Parkin Drawing Prize exhibition on Monday 16 July 2018.
All the artworks will be for sale giving admirers and collectors the opportunity to purchase some wonderful pieces which are unlikely to be seen again, given many of the finalists are not represented in any gallery.
“I’m once again thrilled to see such an enthusiastic response for this year’s competition. I am looking forward to seeing the diverse range of artworks on show at the gallery and getting the drawing conversation going once again,” said Chris Parkin, founder of the Parkin Drawing Prize.
“The Academy congratulates all the finalists and all the artists who contributed to this wonderful prize. The 2018 version is subtle, clever and thoughtful and once again does not disappoint in any way.” said Greg Chaston, President of the NZ Academy of Fine Arts.
Five artists were short-listed for two pieces of work this year. They include Creek Waddington from Lower Hutt, Donna-Marie Patterson from Christchurch, Sarah Callesen and Krystina Kaza from Auckland and Michelle Farrell from Waiuku.
Works in the award exhibition range in size from the small (135x92) to the very large (2200x3000). Entries have been received throughout New Zealand from Auckland to as far south as Dunedin and even from New Zealand artists residing in Australia and Barcelona.
There were a range of drawings utilising the
expected materials such charcoal, graphite and pencil while
other artists have chosen mediums such as metallic thread,
chalk, recycled nylons, a plastic irrigation tube, a steel
rod and even 800 metres of a .6mm fishing line – leaving
the question open as to ‘what is drawing?’.
