Showquest – new music, dance and drama event for schools
comes to Nelson
Nelson is the second region to stage the new performance event for schools, with local teens capturing the spirit of the event in themes that are important to them.
In Nelson there are seven schools entered, with over 200 students taking part. Event publicist Georgia Parker says there some themes that reflect young people’s concerns.
“Waimea College is presenting ‘Distorted Images’, a performance that explores societies fascination with covering up flaws in order to fit in performed by an all female team of 19 students,” she said. “The girls are fizzing at the opportunity of performing outside of school and can’t wait to shine on stage.”
The full list of Nelson entrants and themes is:
Nayland College - Home is where the dream is
Waimea College – Distorted Images.
Waimea Intermediate - Mermaid Tears: Oceans of Plastic
Garin College - I shop therefore…I am
Nelson College - War- A Pyrrhic Victor
Motueka High School Team 1 - Voyaging (Across Oceans)
Motueka High School Team 2 - Rain Rituals
Showquest is being run by Rockquest Promotions, the team that has been producing Smokefreerockquest and Smokefree Tangata Beats across New Zealand for the past three decades. The event in Nelson is a collaboration with local group Break Out, and the support of the Nelson City Council.
Matt Ealand from the Rockquest Promotions Auckland office says teams will be judged overall on their performance, soundtrack, costuming, chorography, and theme.
“Showquest is structured on a competitive framework, but the driving rationale, as with all the Rock Promotions’ events, is to encourage participation, creative growth and team work,” he says. “We find that if we are able to provide a platform where students can express themselves on their own terms within the boundaries of the event, the rewards go far beyond the rush of performing on the day.”
Awards to be presented at the Nelson event include first, second and third places and the Star Award for overall spirit (voted by teachers on the day). In registering for the programme schools can opt out of the competitive aspect of the event.
Showquest Nelson will be held at the Trafalgar Centre on Tuesday June 26 start time 7pm, tickets $10 students, $20 adults, $60 family of five, at the door or from Ticketmaster.
Showquest is being staged staged in Northland, Nelson, Dunedin, Christchurch, Wellington, Hawkes Bay, Rotorua, Hamilton, New Plymouth and Auckland. A national online final will name the top entry nationwide in September.
Teams in the competitive section will be judged overall on their performance, soundtrack, costuming, chorography, and theme.
