ASB gift Black Ferns a lasting memento at historic capping event
ASB as proud partner of the world-champion Black Ferns is delighted to have been part of the inaugural capping event
celebrating former players, who created history 20 years ago by coming home victorious from the first official Women’s
Rugby World Cup.
ASB head of community, sponsorship and events Mark Graham says, “It was an incredible achievement and the team has
continued to propel women’s rugby to the forefront of the world stage, solidifying themselves as role models for women
everywhere.”
The capping was part of a Black Ferns Reunion Dinner held at Eden Park last night, and it mirrors the tradition of
capping All Blacks, which started in 2009 to mark a player’s first test.
To celebrate their dedication and determination, ASB has given a locally designed and handmade sterling silver chevron
necklace to the capped players. The forward pointing chevron shape symbolises Progress, and is a testament to the
momentous occasion for each of the players who are always moving forward, not only in their careers but to advance
women’s rugby worldwide.
“They’re proof that passion, ambition and incredible work ethic is truly unbeatable, and it can have a lasting inspiring
impact on the next generation of girls dreaming of achieving great things whether it is on the sports field, in
business, or both,” says Graham.
“Embracing diversity is really important to ASB and equally so is helping Kiwis progress and that is why we’re proud to
be standing alongside these inspirational women. When they pulled on the black jersey creating history in 1998 they
truly embodied the indomitable spirit of New Zealand. We’re looking forward to joining with New Zealanders and cheering
on the current Black Ferns to a successful 2018 season and beyond,” Graham says.
